Act Collectively
Act collectively
Together, communities can make positive impacts.
There are countless benefits to working together. Community teams might be surprised at the unintended consequences that occur after coming together. Sometimes unexpected partnerships are formed, relationships blossom, and new leaders emerge. Paying attention to all aspects of collaboration is essential. Collaborating on projects can lead to positive, sustainable changes.
Just listen to stories from Tara and Rick. Once service providers came together, they began to realize the value each member brought to the table and the quality service organizations provide. They uncovered the power of networks and inclusive communication. They identified that they have common goals and established creative solutions.
Together communities explored solutions to challenges they were facing. Some examples include:
- Financial literacy training - Provide free or low-cost sessions on money management, how to budget, and beyond
- Volunteer income tax program - Provide free workshops and services during tax season
- Technology lending program - Working with partners to refurbish old computers and loan them out to individuals as needed
- Transportation program - Driving services, bus vouchers, and taxi access to help individuals get to important appointments
The following is a list of evidence-based strategies that can support and enhance community financial wellbeing:
- Information Provision – Create online or print resources with information on available services and programs to support financial well-being in your community.
- Identification Services - Provide easy access to government-issued identification (ID) for people in your community. Many services that promote financial well-being, such as opening a bank account or gaining employment, require government issued ID.
- Events and Attractions - Low-cost access to events and attractions can promote financial well-being in your community. Provide low-income residents with free, subsidized, or discounted fees for cultural, sport, and recreation services, programs, and events.
- Employment Support - Help people find and retain employment or start a small business to promote financial well-being in your community. This can include job-seeking assistance, job placements, and the provision of job training and skills.
- Public Transportation, Taxi Services and Alternative Transportation - Provide free or discounted public transportation to people with low-income in your community to promote financial well-being. Municipalities or regions can provide discounts on public transportation and/or organizations can run a ‘donate-a-ride’ program. Provide a discounted or subsidized taxi service to people in need in your community to improve financial well-being. Alternative affordable transportation can include car-shares, carpools, on-demand curb-to-curb service, and/or volunteer driver programs. It can also involve providing gas gift cards, fare subsidies, or discounts for regional transportation.
- Supportive Housing and Housing Policies - Provide housing with wrap-around supports to promote financial well-being in your community. Supportive housing includes affordable housing with targeted social and/or medical support for people with complex needs. Encourage the development of safe, secure, and affordable housing through municipal building regulations, zoning, and financial incentives to promote financial well-being in your community.
